Ben Affleck Talks About Why He Decided to Retire as Batman

There comes a time when every man must hang up his cape and utility belt and move on. That time has come for countless men with strong jawlines who have played Batman in the past. We thought we had something interesting when Ben Affleck signed on to the role. The idea that Affleck, who managed to turn his career around to become a fantastic director, could someday direct a Batman movie was even more exciting than Affleck playing the role. However, it wasn't meant to be and after two mediocre entries in the DC universe and a failed solo movie, it was time for Affleck to move on. He appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live! and was asked about walking away from the role.

"I tried to direct a version of it and worked with a really good screenwriter, but just couldn't come up with a version, I couldn't crack it. So I thought it was time let someone else take a shot at it. They got some really good people so I'm excited."

It's a shame that it didn't work out and now we are going to have even more endless speculation as to who is going to take up the role for Matt Reeves The Batman. It's also going to be interesting to see how they handle the recasting. Are they going to turn it into a plot point or are they going to just ignore it and move on like Mark Ruffalo in The Avengers? DC does like complicated continuity stories but that might be a bit much for the average fan to handle so they might just move on. As for Affleck, when asked if he had any parting words, could only joke:

"I don't know? I guess, I'm not Batman."
