After the release of the recent Alien: Romulus trailer, fans have been extremely excited about the promising return of the franchise. And to add to the anticipation, it's the first film in quite some time that doesn't follow a specific story or ongoing Alien film series. Though, as you might have expected, there are still a few big connections that could be made here; it's just a matter of how. During a new interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the film's director, Fede Álvarez, has officially confirmed that the next entry occurs between the first Alien film and its sequel, Aliens. So, what should we anticipate in terms of shared continuity?

Alien: Romulus Director Explains His Approach to Continuity

Álvarez explains, "Now, if you've seen the others, then it's a completely different experience in a way because you'll see and you'll find those connections with the other movies. And if you're a fan, you'll be that person who annoys your friends in the theater by telling them that you know what this is from and where that gun is from and what the characters are talking about." He continues, "So it is crafted in that way, and hopefully, it works that way for everybody, but it is connected to all of them. I love all of those movies. I didn't want to omit or ignore any of them when it comes to connections at a story level, character level, technology level, and creature level. There's always connections from Alien to Alien: Covenant."

Given the franchise's current status and its tendency to explore prequels, it doesn't appear that an Alien 5 is coming anytime soon. This is kind of a bummer after the consistent interest from filmmaker Neill Blomkamp and original Alien star Sigourney Weaver. But at minimum, we're still getting some buzz-worthy franchise lore, which is a major win regardless of where it's placed.

Alien: Romulus hits theaters on August 16, 2024.
