Booze Geek – Game of Thrones Iron Throne Blonde Ale
GAME OF THRONES SPECIAL
Beer: Game of Thrones Iron Throne Blonde Ale
Brewery: Brewery Ommegang
ABV: 6.5%
Perfectly coinciding with HBO's teaser image release of Jon Snow brandishing a bleeding eye, I cracked open my bottle of Iron Throne Blonde Ale. Iron Throne was the first of the Game of Thrones inspired beers from Brewery Ommegang to be released, but it was also the only one I missed out on. Luckily, the beer was brought back for a 2015 rerelease.
Iron Throne poured a long lasting, frothy head, about two inches thick at the most. The beer gave off scents of yeast and bread, with some banana and light lemon peel.
I found lemon peel to be the most predominant flavor in the Iron Throne. The beer was made with grains of paradise to add pepperiness to it, but I did not find any bites of pepper while drinking it. It also had a grassy character to it with a bit of banana in the finish. It was light on the palate and easy to drink.
Though I was happy to add Iron Throne to my Game of Thrones collection, I must say that the beer did not blow me away. It was fine enough to drink, but it did not boast the flavor profiles of some of the other beers produced by Ommegang so far.
Dylan Gonzalez happens to love beer and comic books and luckily found a place to write about both because he has no idea how to actually make money in the real world. He lives in a cave in New Jersey.
