Bringing the God Back to Godzilla: King of the Monsters

There are quite a few things about Godzilla: King of the Monsters that looks very interesting. The idea that there could be more fact to the various deities that people used to worship is a great angle and it sounds like director Michael Dougherty is really leaning into that. USA Today posted their 2019 preview and spoke to Dougherty about these creatures and what we can expect from them.

In the movie's world, "they're not just big dumb animals. They were worshipped back in the day," Dougherty says.

The fact that they were worshipped means that these creatures had some sort of interaction with humans. The art and other things we see on the Monarch Sciences website indicate that and this movie will explore that idea. These are gods which adds a new angle.

"There's a fantastical element that comes into that. It's not just pure science fiction."

As for Dougherty, this is pretty much a dream project. The director loved Godzilla as a kid and described him as a "security blanket" when he was four.

"I would take him to church. That's how much I loved him."

A love of the source material is important when it comes to making movies these days so it's great to hear how much this all means to Dougherty. A sense of passion is always better than a boring movie.

Summary: The next chapter in Warner Bros. Pictures' and Legendary Pictures' cinematic MonsterVerse: an epic action-adventure that pits Godzilla against some of the most popular monsters in pop culture history.

Godzilla: King of the Monsters, directed by Michael Dougherty, stars Vera Farmiga, Millie Bobby Brown, Bradley Whitford, Kyle Chandler, and Thomas Middleditch.

It's gonna roar into theaters on May 31st, 2019.
