James Gunn Returns to Twitter Following Rehiring for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3
It took almost a year but Disney finally made the right decision. James Gunn, the writer and director of the previous two Guardians of the Galaxy movies, would be rehired to direct the third movie. Gunn was fired last July following a right-wing campaign against the director using decades-old tweets and bad jokes. Gunn, to his credit, never tried to explain away the jokes and took full responsibility. He has stayed mostly quiet on social media and never once lashed out at Disney for deciding to let him go. Gunn returned to Twitter for the first time to thank everyone for standing behind him.
The campaign against Gunn not only failed to get him fired from the Marvel movies but during the last nine months or so Gunn was picked up by Warner Bros. and DC to direct the next entry in the Suicide Squad series. That movie, due out August 6, 2021, is very much still happening and it is being reported that work on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 won't start until The Suicide Squad is complete.
Fans are also poking around through previous interviews to see if this was something people have been hinting about. Sean Gunn, James' brother who does the motion-capture work for Rocket Raccoon and plays Ravager Kraglin, said earlier this month that "I just have this feeling everything's gonna work itself out." All reports seem to indicate that the decision to hire Gunn back was made months ago so maybe Sean was hinting.
It doesn't really matter now; we're getting two new James Gunn-directed superhero movies now instead of one. Despite the fact that Gunn never should have been fired in the first place it's nice to see that everything did, in fact, work out.
