Lando Calrissian Will Not Appear In Star Wars: The Last Jedi

Sorry, Lando Calrissian fans — it sounds like he isn't going to make an appearance in Star Wars: The Last Jedi. Lando, who ended up being a rather important character in the original trilogy, hasn't been mentioned by name in the new movies yet. There is going to be a scene in The Last Jedi that [light spoilers] takes place in a huge casino, so fans assumed that a gambler like Lando could make an appearance. Turns out that isn't the case, as director/writer Rian Johnson confirmed to Entertainment Weekly.

"No, and I don't want fans to get their hopes up," writer-director Rian Johnson tells EW. "He's not in the film and it was never really something that came up. I mean, I loved that character. It would have been fun to see him, but it's just not something that ever really had a place in the story."

Actor Billy Dee Williams is a regular at the convention circuit now, and according to his manager Brad Kramer, wanted to return.

"Billy respects the studio and all involved in the decision but would be happy to be in any future Star Wars film if asked," Kramer told EW.

So it sounds like we're going to be missing the older version of Lando for another movie. We know a young version of him, played by Donald Glover, will be in Solo: A Star Wars Story — but maybe J.J. Abrams will make room for him in Episode IX.

Summary: Having taken her first steps into a larger world in Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015), Rey continues her epic journey with Finn, Poe and Luke Skywalker in the next chapter of the saga, Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi, directed by Rian Johnson, stars Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Mark Hamill, Oscar Isaac, Carrie Fisher, and Adam Driver. It will be released on December 15th.
