Star Wars: The Last Jedi – Rey Feels Adrift In This World

Star Wars: The Last Jedi is teasing some interesting thing with its main protagonist and antagonist. Adam Driver and Daisy Ridley both spoke to Entertainment Weekly about where their characters are when we meet up with them in The Last Jedi.

Despite hating Rey and the very concept of her because he lost Driver says that Kylo Ren feels begrudging respect for her.

"He has been aware of this ability in himself from such a young age, and I don't think there's a lot of people around him who are on the same level," the actor says. "I think that there is something familiar there, as well as something to be feared, or something … that he can't quite place."

Rey, on the other hand, is a little lost still. She has these new abilities and she just wants to understand and control them to help people.

"She doesn't really know what she wants," Ridley tells EW. "She really is trying to do the right thing and morally, her compass is really pointing north."

Despite The Resistance coming to help her on Star Killer Ridley says that it isn't really a tangible thing for her right away.

"The Resistance is really not that much to her," the actress says. "I mean, she's been left her whole life, and very quickly is eager to sort of help other people, which is wonderful. She wants to be part of something. I mean, everyone wants to be part of something."

Star Wars has always had an element of growing up and figuring out who you are, where you belong, and what you believe is part of growing up. Director Rian Johnson says we can see Rey embark on that kind of journey.

"This is very much about Rey trying to figure out how she fits into all this, much like any of us as we're growing up, as we're transitioning from childhood into adulthood," Johnson says. "You're going meet people who you think are going help who don't. And help is also going come from unexpected places."

That source, according to Entertainment Weekly, is Kylo Ren. A lot is being made about whether Kylo will return to the Light Side or Rey will fall to the Dark Side because both characters appear to be walking toward that line.

"Anybody that's committed to anything, at a certain point in their life … you kind of constantly question why you got into it in the first place," Driver says.

Kylo will question his loyalty to the dark while Rey questions her loyalty to the light. One character could save or destroy the other very easily.

Summary: Having taken her first steps into a larger world in Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015), Rey continues her epic journey with Finn, Poe and Luke Skywalker in the next chapter of the saga, Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi, directed by Rian Johnson, stars Daisy Ridley, John Boyega, Mark Hamill, Oscar Isaac, Carrie Fisher, and Adam Driver. It will be released on December 15th.
