Warner Bros. is dating some new films as we head into the second half of the year. While Inside Out 2 might have just become the biggest movie of 2023, Warner Bros. is still having a very good year, primarily thanks to Dune and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire. So the new release date announcements really shouldn't be that surprising, so why break something that isn't broken? We know another Monsterverse movie is on the way, and some small details have started coming out, including a confirmed writer and director, David Callaham and Grant Sputore, respectively. However, we now have something else to add to the list: a release date. According to Variety, Legendary and Warner Bros. have dated the next entry in the Monsterverse for March 26, 2027. The spring release dates have worked out well for them twice now, and once again, why break something that isn't broken? An untitled animation film from Warner Bros. Animation and Locksmith was removed from this date; at the time of writing, it doesn't have a new date.
The second film will have people speculating because it was announced that they had dated an event film from director Denis Villeneuve for December 18, 2026. Most people will probably assume it will be the next Dune film, which has been confirmed to be in the works. While Villeneuve has said the script is close to being done, he's also said he needs a break from that particular universe. There is also a time jump between books one and two. It's not like they have to rush; time is on their side this time. The report from Variety says that they have entered into talks for the adaptation of Nuclear War: A Scenario, but it's unclear if that is the film they are talking about for December. Here is the detailed summary of the books from Penguin Randomhouse:
"There is only one scenario other than an asteroid strike that could end the world as we know it in a matter of hours: nuclear war. And one of the triggers for that war would be a nuclear missile inbound toward the United States.
Every generation, a journalist has looked deep into the heart of the nuclear military establishment: the technologies, the safeguards, the plans, and the risks. These investigations are vital to how we understand the world we really live in—where one nuclear missile will beget one in return and where the choreography of the world's end requires massive decisions made on seconds' notice with information that is only as good as the intelligence we have.
Pulitzer Prize finalist Annie Jacobsen's Nuclear War: A Scenario explores this ticking-clock scenario, based on dozens of exclusive new interviews with military and civilian experts who have built the weapons, have been privy to the response plans, and have been responsible for those decisions should they have needed to be made. Nuclear War: A Scenario examines the handful of minutes after a nuclear missile launch. It is essential reading and unlike any other book in its depth and urgency."
Will people claim that Warner Bros. is trying to copy Universal and Oppenheimer's homework? Probably, but we'll have to see how this all plays out.
