"Wonder Woman 1984": Patty Jenkins Talks Upping the Stakes Plus a New Image

Warner Bros. and DC Comics are looking to have a very interesting year when it comes to their comic book movies. Birds of Prey wasn't a smash hit but it is doing okay when it comes to the worldwide box office and did very well critically. Now they have the follow-up to Wonder Woman coming out in a few months and this one is going to be hard. This was a movie that hit hard culturally and it's going to be next to impossible to have that kind of impact a second time. They are doing all the right things when it comes to a sequel to a game-changing movie which is upping the stakes. Wonder Woman 1984 director Patty Jenkins recently spoke to Total Film about how this was a much harder movie to shoot and they were relying on more practical stunts. We also got a new image of Diana beating two guys up.

"a much harder movie to shoot… I was more ambitious with it. So doing all the stunts for real on wires and things, it's extremely complicated and time-consuming. And everybody involved knows that you could say, 'Oh, forget it, we'll just do it in CG.' So it was difficult in a new way [compared to the first film]."

Jenkins explained that they weren't trying to mimic the 1980s when it comes to the aesthetic of this movie. Instead, they are very much trying to create a movie that was made in the 80s which is going to make for an interesting look.

"We weren't trying to make a mimicry [of the '80s]," says Jenkins. "We were trying to make a movie as if it was a grounded movie in the '80s."

What is DC going to do if Wonder Woman 1984 underperforms compared to the first one? We'll have to see but there is a chance that the cultural impact won't be as big as the first one. The first movie was lightning in a bottle fueled by a desire to see female superheroes on screen in a way we hadn't ever seen before. This year we'll have two solo female superhero movies coming out within a month of each other. Will Wonder Wonder 1984 still have an important place in the landscape now that she isn't standing alone? We'll have to see but this writer is once again asking for this movie not to suck the same way she did in the lead up to the first movie.

So, please, Wonder Woman 1984, I would very much appreciate it if you don't suck.

Wonder Woman 1984, directed by Patty Jenkins, stars Gal Gadot, Chris Pine, Kristen Wiig, Pedro Pascal, Connie Nielsen, and Gabriella Wilde. It will be released on June 5, 2020.
