Amazon Studios Eyeing Lisbeth Salander-Focused Dragon Tattoo Series
Amazon Studios and Sony Pictures Television are looking to get into business with Lisbeth Salander, with the late author Stieg Larsson's The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo character set for her own series. The series is currently going by the title of her literary debut, but Variety is reporting that it will not be a sequel or a continuation of any storylines from the books or films. Instead, the project places Salander in our modern world with a new setting, new supporting characters, and new storylines. Amazon Studios and Sony Pictures Television are set to produce, with Left Bank Pictures founder and CEO Andy Harries (The Crown, Outlander) and Rob Bullock (The Night Manager, Wild at Heart) set to executive produce. No writer or lead actress is currently attached to the series.
A primary reason for the franchise's 100 million-plus book sales worldwide, Salander's literary life began with Larsson's three original "Millenium" novels: The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, The Girl Who Played With Fire, and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets' Nest. Following the original author's passing, David Lagercrantz would continue the series with The Girl in the Spider's Web, The Girl Who Takes an Eye for an Eye, and The Girl Who Lived Twice. On the film side, Salander has been portrayed by several actresses. Noomi Rapace played the role in the original Swedish film trilogy (with Tehilla Blad cast as a younger Salander), while Rooney Mara played the role in 2011's U.S. adaptation The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. Claire Foy would go on to play the role in the 2018 film adaptation of The Girl in the Spider's Web.
First published by Norstedts Förlag in 2005, here's a look at Larsson's The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo (with the trailer for the U.S. adaptation):
Harriet Vanger, a scion of one of Sweden's wealthiest families disappeared over forty years ago. All these years later, her aged uncle continues to seek the truth. He hires Mikael Blomkvist, a crusading journalist recently trapped by a libel conviction, to investigate. He is aided by the pierced and tattooed punk prodigy Lisbeth Salander. Together they tap into a vein of unfathomable iniquity and astonishing corruption.
