Blue Ribbon Baking Championship Thoughts: "Aunt Sandy" Is Back!

Netflix's Blue Ribbon Baking Championship brings Sandra Lee back to a viewing audience alongside blue ribbon-winning bakers from local fairs.

Sandra Lee is famous for many things, among them her flagship show, Semi-Homemade with Sandra Lee, which has garnered a new following on TikTok and social media, with new audiences dubbing her "Aunt Sandy." So, what does this have to do with the State Fair? I'm glad you asked! The classic American festivity features competitions for several domestic disciplines and Aunt Sandy and Netflix have teamed up to create a new competition TV baking show: Blue Ribbon Baking Championship.

Blue Ribbon Baking Championship is a standard format baking show, however all of the contestants are blue-ribbon winners in baking categories at their own local fairs. From young, upstart bakers who used this to bolster their confidence to bake professionally to grandmas who live on a farm and bake for 8,237 grandchildren (okay, I made that number up, but there's never enough dessert for hungry mouths), each contestant has their own blue-ribbon journey, and all nine are hoping to bring home the mother of all blue ribbons: the Baking Championship blue ribbon.

Hosted by Jason Biggs and Sandra Lee and judged by Sandra Lee, Bryan Ford, and former White House pastry chef Bill Yosses, this wholesome and quirky spin on the classic bake-off format feels more akin to a certain British Baking Show. While there is money and fame on the line, it's not cutthroat, and everyone genuinely feels like they want to help others, and that's the true spirit of baking. Sometimes, the shows are focused on disasters or failures, but Blue Ribbon Baking Championship feels uplifting and friendly, even when the bakes do go wrong.

The fair theme makes for some interesting prompts and innovative bakes, which mixes up the format with purpose and not just for the bit – like the Seuss Baking Challenge or others seem to do. What is the point of incorporating broccoli in a cupcake? I digress, though. There is no broccoli in the Blue Ribbon Baking Championship barn, thank goodness. Only good, American Fair-style desserts and twists.
