Freakazoid! Star Paul Rugg Reflects on Series Finale Curtain Call

Freakazoid! star Paul Rugg reflects on how the series was planning to go out with a bang upon learning that it was being cancelled.

During the 1990s stretch of Steven Spielberg-executive produced animation at Warner Bros, there were undoubtedly some notable gems in Tiny Toon: Adventures, which operated as a spinoff of Looney Tunes; Animaniacs, which involved equally zany fictional Warner Bros in Yakko and Wakko along with their sister Dot; and perhaps arguably one of the most off-the-wall in the superhero Freakazoid!. The latter stood out as a cult favorite since it lasted only two seasons from 1995-1997, while the first two lasted far longer and have legacy sequels. Series star Paul Rugg, who played Freakazoid, shared a memory about the final (literal) curtain call in the series finale "Normadeus," which was so rare that any show would take the time, much less an animated show, to thank the fans for their dedication in that context directly. The only other one that comes to memory is The CW's Supernatural.

"We knew we had been canceled when we wrote and recorded our last episode, so we decided to spend every last penny and go out big with the most cast members ever crammed into our recording studio while singing gleefully and shedding a tear or two!" Rugg wrote. The clip starts with Freakazoid starting, "I also want to thank all the villains on the show. Haven't they been great sports?" After they join him, he continues, "Let's not forget my buddy Cosgrove [Ed Asner], my mentor Roddy McStew [Craig Ferguson], my manservant Professor Jones [Jonathan Harris], my girlfriend Steff [Tracy Rowe], my mom [Tress MacNeille], dad [John P. McCann], jerky brother Duncan [Googy Gress], my cat Mr. Chubbikins, our executive producer Steven Spielberg, and our very own announcer Mr. Joel Leahy! Now before we go, [tearing up] we'd like to leave you with this thought" before the cast breaks out in the song "We'll Meet Again."

Also featured in the number were Norm Abram, Jeff Bennett, Corey Burton, Larry Cedar, Maurice LaMarche, Ricardo Montalban, Clive Revill, and David Warner. The series follows Dexter Douglas, who, after working on his computer, is mysteriously turned into the oddball superhero Freakazoid! who battled equally off-the-wall villains.
