'Luther' Coming Back to BBC America THIS SUNDAY!

It's been a long, long three years, but we're finally about to get some new Luther in our lives. The BBC series will be returning with an all-new season of episodes starting on Sunday, June 2nd, and I know I'm more than ready for this show to kick my teeth in.

Idris Elba returns as John Luther, the long suffering Detective Chief Inspector, who struggles with the darker impulses that compel him throughout his investigations. Elba is flat out amazing on the series, and it looks like this new fifth season will bring more eye-ball searing greatness to our TV sets:

A new spate of nightmarish murders brings DCI John Luther to once again face the depths of human depravity on the streets of London. While the monstrous and seemingly indiscriminate killings become ever more audacious and public, Luther and new recruit D.S. Catherine Halliday (Wunmi Mosaku) are confounded by a complex tangle of leads and misdirection that seems designed to protect an untouchable corruption. As the body count rises, and gangster George Cornelius (Patrick Malahide) applies his own pressure, can Luther catch a killer and save his own neck?

Addicted to Luther

Elba spoke recently with Entertainment Weekly about playing the titular detective, stating that he feels somewhat addicted to the character:

It's one of those career characters," the 46-year-old actor says of playing the troubled Detective John Luther on BBC and BBC America's dark crime series Luther. "I've been addicted to the lifestyle and expressive nature of Luther for a while." So much so that he admits that it takes it's toll: "I always find myself needing therapy both before and after I play him. Afterwards, I need a nice break, I get to reset, it's often when I make really good music or DJ great sets, because I've been in such a dark place for a long time that it's nice to get out."

We have that in common, I guess. I'm pretty addicted to watching Luther. We should hang out and talk, Mr. Elba.

Strong Crime Programming

BBC America will be playing Luther on the same evening that had hosted Killing Eve until its jaw-dropping finale last week. BBC America has been putting out some exceptionally compelling crime programming lately, but this season of Luther will not run as long as Eve did.

Originally broadcast by the BBC for UK audiences in January of 2019, the fifth season of Luther runs a pretty lean four episodes, but that allows the writers to deliver an incredibly tight script.

As for a sixth season, Elba says (again to EW) that it's time for a new format:

"I think we should be changing format now," he says, sharing his hopes for a movie. "The last few seasons have been more like mini-movies, and film allows us to now have more dramatic pin points moments that are slightly more compressed and it's a bigger but smaller dose of Luther."
