Netflix's GLOW Renewed For Second Season

Netflix's fictionalized comedy-drama about the inception of women's wrestling, GLOW, is getting a second season, announced by Netflix itself and reported by Collider.

The show, starring Alison Brie, Marc Maron, Sydelle Noel, Britney Young, Betty Gilpin, and Chris Lowell, tells the story of the inception of the "Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling" or GLOW, which is put together by Maron's Sam Sylvia, a down-on-his-luck exploitation film director who is tasked with creating a women's wrestling show by cocaine-addicted producer, Bash, played by Lowell. Among the people who audition are Ruth Wilder, played by Alison Brie, who is a failed actress, Debbie Eagan, played by Betty Gilpin, (former) best friend to Ruth and a former soap star and stay at home mom, and Carmen Wade, played by Britney Young, who is the daughter of a professional wrestling star by the name of "Goliath Jackson."

Each participant has their own reasons for being a part of this, and they face many challenges, financial, personal, and otherwise, in the path of putting this together. It's also worth noting that Ruth had sex with Debbie Eagan's husband at the beginning of the show, and Eagan finds out. This tension and distrust runs through almost the entirety of the series.

The show is produced by Liz Flahive and Carly Mensch. Flahive is most known for producing Homeland, and Mensch is lauded for her works on Orange is the New Black and Weeds. Both women also worked on Nurse Jackie.

The show is dripping with 1980's charm, from the soundtrack, to the fashion, to the casual racism, to the fact that most characters are really, really high on cocaine. The wresting scenes are a lot of fun, the costuming is great, and each of the characters are really compelling and well-written.

GLOW is currently available for streaming by those with a Netflix subscription. I personally loved it and would highly recommend it to anyone. No release date has been announced for season 2 as of yet.
