The Punisher Season 2: Showrunner Steve Lightfoot is a Fan of the 13-Episode "Slow Burn"

There are a lot of Marvel/Netflix shows in production right now, and one of them is the second season of The Punisher. The series was pretty well received overall, and it was praised for the way it handled the very idea of the Punisher, a gun-toting white man taking the law into his own hands, with tact. It's not surprising that it got a second season, and Collider recently spoke to showrunner Steven Lightfoot about whether he took fan reactions into account while planning season 2.

"That's always tricky because you get such a variation, some people love it, some people hate it, some people are in the middle. My personal opinion with that stuff is you just have to be true to the character and the story you choose to tell. You want them to love it obviously, but if you start worrying about the audience it can be a trap. I think we just have to keep trying to be true to Frank's character and make him someone people want to hang out with."

That's a great way of looking at it. Lightfoot seems to have a good understanding about what makes Frank Castle so compelling. These characters have been around for a long time, and while there are some adjustments you need to make when adapting material from one medium to the other, understanding the character is fundamentally important. Lightfoot was then asked if he had a full season in mind when he pitched.

"Very loosely. What happens when you then start writing a season is you find things and writers come up with things and things appear in episodes and it sort of takes on a life of itself, so you can't be too rigid with that stuff. I always knew what the journey of Season 1 was which meant I knew what Season 2 would be."

That means Lightfoot is willing to let the story adapt as it goes on. He doesn't have a specific plan that he wants to follow but instead is taking the next logical step in the franchise. Sometimes things change from concept to actually releasing a product, and it sounds like Lightfoot was willing to adapt. Finally, there are some people who think the Marvel/Netflix model of 13 episodes is too many, but Lightfoot is a fan.

"It's an interesting thing, that. People have always said to me, 'Do you wish you'd have had 10?' and then I say, 'Well then you would've had less story.' I always wanted it to be a slow burn show. I always felt like we had the right amount for 13, and you've gotta have enough story for that but I like how slow burn and character-driven the shows are."

There is currently no release date for The Punisher season 2, but stay tuned for when the news drops.
