Supergirl Season 3: Why It's Important For Kara To Have A Secret Identity
Yesterday we talked about how on Supergirl they've brought back the secret identity aspect with Kara Danvers (Melissa Benoist) now working for her friend Lena Luthor (Katie McGrath). I'm not a fan of that and have appreciated how most of the Arrowverse shows do away with it and avoid the sitcom moments it leads to, but there may be a specific reason for the writers to bring it back for the third season.
McGrath told TVLine.com that Lena not knowing about Kara is exactly what she needs:
"I think it's important for Kara to have someone she doesn't have to be Supergirl with. If Lena knew the truth, she'd always be Supergirl. And she needs to be Kara. That's what this whole season is about, her struggling with her humanity. She has to be solely that person for somebody, and if that person has to be me, it makes me feel special."
That is a pretty strong point, and it does go well with the stated theme for the season. The season started with Kara blocking out what she saw as human emotions, though Kryptonians aren't known for not having emotions. And while she started getting past that by the end of the premiere, all of episode two was about the guilt she felt at sending Mon-El into space. It only makes sense that she needs someone around that doesn't know she's Supergirl — someone who just accepts her as Kara.
Supergirl airs Mondays at 8 p.m. ET on the CW.
