Now Marvel Makes Colourist Exclusive

After all that fuss earlier last week about whether colourists are important enough to get cover credit or royalties, Marvel seem to indicate that maybe they should be, by signing an exclusive deal with Elizabeth Breitweiser.

Elizabeth has an extremely distinctive style and attractive style which has been used to full effect on the upcoming Captain America:  Patriot series. Whether she will gain royalties and cover credit as a result, I don't know. Marvel have been putting a lot more colourist names on their covers of late. But it's certainly an indication of respect that Marvel has for her craft – and making sure that DC Comics doesn't get to use any of it. But more than that – Marvel are making a song and dance of announcing it. This is hardly the first colouring exclusive – but it's the first they've announced publically for some time.

It's also worth noting that a run of stories announcing relatively smaller excluisves stories is a sure sign that Marvel expect DC to be releasing their own new exclusive deals, and this may be an attempt to to take a modicum of wind out of their sails. If not sales.
