David Hine's Six For September
It was only a few years ago that David Hine couldn't get work in comics. He's burst onto the scene in the nineties with his seminal graphic novel Strange Embrace along with a few 2000AD and Crisis strips. But after that… nothing. For ten years. It was Marvel's expansion with the arrival of Joe Quesada and Bill Jemas that made the different. They took all sorts of people in with all sorts of backgrounds. And suddenly that graphic novel, however weird, however odd, was a calling card and a foot in the door.
Now Hine works extensively for Marvel, Image, Todd McFarlane, Top Cow, DC and Radical.
And this September… oh boy.
Now it's not in any one publishers interest to publicise all the other books a creator is doing for them, which is why you probably won't see this kind of thing elsewhere.
So here is David Hine's Six for September.
September 1st
The Darkness: Four Horsemen #2 (of 4) drawn by Jeff Wamester from Top Cow.
Jackie Estacado has arrived in the California desert town of Ginsberg, where Hell has come to Earth. The Demon Riders have brought out the worst in the townspeople and Ginsberg burns. Jackie believes he has faced monsters before, but nothing like this.
September 8th
Nothing! Take a well earned David Hine break, and get ready to ramp up for the next week.
15th September
The Bulletproof Coffin # 4 (of 6) art by Shaky Kane from Image Comics.
In one world Steve Neumann cleans up a gruesome murder scene, while as Coffin Fly he finally gets to kiss the girl of his dreams. But which is the dream? WARNING! Do not read this issue's title aloud! "Red Wraith, Red Wraith, Red Wraith."
Azrael #12. Art by Guillem March from DC Comics.
In "The Killer of Saints" part 3 of 4, truth and faith come into conflict when Azrael risks everything to save the life of the keeper of the True Shroud. If he fails, the secret of the shroud will be lost forever. If he succeeds, he must face the fact that everything he ever believed in is a lie.
22nd September
The Spirit #6. Art by Moritat from DC Comics.
The dealers of Central City's most dangerous new high, Frost, don't follow the rules of the game… and when innocent children are taken hostage, it's The Spirit who has to jump into hot water to save them. Did we say hot water? We meant burning, molten steel!
29th September
Ryder On The Storm 1 (of 3) drawn by Wayne Nichols from Radical Publishing
Ryder on the Storm follows Ryder, a private eye hired by the beautiful femme fatale Katrina Petruska to investigate the horrifically bizarre suicide of her lover, Michael Hudson. Ryder's journey to solve the case and finish Hudson's work leads him to discover a truth more sinister and terrifying than he could have ever imagined — demons walk among us. Now he must team up with the last demon hunter, Charles Monk, to take down the cabal of ancient evil controlling the city while struggling to reconcile with the dark side of his own nature.
Detective Comics #869. Art by Scott McDaniel and Andy Owens from DC Comics
"Impostors" continues here! Madness and mayhem face off against law and order for control of Gotham City, and not even the Batman is safe! With The Joker Impostor leading the charge of chaos and filling the streets of Gotham with his army of Jokerz, the ranks of the Batman Impostor's army grow thanks to regular citizens choosing sides and taking up arms. But what is Impostor Joker's ultimate goal – and what does it have to do with the real Dark Knight and Clown Prince of Crime?
Hine tells me
There is also Hollow Point from Radical in December (six-issue series), an issue of Elephantmen I'm writing and drawing, a secret Top Cow project and a one-shot with a big-name artist for DC waiting on the green light. The Lovecraft story with Mark Stafford is part of a Lovecraft anthology out later this year from Self-Made Hero. And I'm plotting a second series of The FVZA for Radical. That will have finished script by someone else. For some reason I've found myself without the time to write full script.
A lot of this material has been written over the past year or so. It's all coming to publication stage over a short period and I have found myself up against it with deadlines in the past couple of months.
