Twitter Sleuths Piece Together The Fault In Our Stars, Uncover Its Director And Cast

Twitter is the worst secret keeper ever.

John Green, author of hit young adult novel The Fault in Our Stars – which is kind of a big deal, Time Magazine named it the #1 book of 2012 and everything – clearly wanted to drum up excitement with this tease:

But Green may not get to break the scoop himself because clever internet sleuths have apparently figured out the Big News: The film will be directed by newcomer Josh Boone, who recently premiered his feature directorial debut Writers at the Toronto Film Festival, and the lead role of Hazel will be played by Girl-of-the-Moment Shailene Woodley.

Here's how they figured it out:

Woodley, who began following Green on the social media site a short while back, retweeted his tease about The Big News. When reached for comment, her reps didn't deny, but rather confirmed to Hypable that she is in fact "being considered" for the part, saying that nothing is official yet. Naturally.

It's a choice that makes sense, given the screenwriters who adapted the script, 500 Days of Summer's Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber, also wrote The Spectacular Now, for which Woodley just won a Special Jury Award for Acting at the Sundance Film Festival.

They clearly have a good working relationship and the girl is clearly on the verge of being a very big star, and seems like a great fit for the role of a cancer-stricken teen who falls in love with another doomed young person at a support group. That role, Augustus Waters, is surely to be much coveted amongst young male stars when casting gets underway.

Boone's involvement is more of a surprise, but his deal seems pretty cemented as well. He began following Green, Woodley, the screenwriters and a producer on the movie over the last few days, and also retweeted Green's big tease, in addition to getting vague congrats like this one:

So Woodley and Boone seem pretty solid, but how far can we take this Twitter-sleuthing? Here's everything else I've come up with.

In the same batch as following the Fault gang, Boone also added actors Johnathan Schaech and Isabelle Fuhrman. Do they have roles in the film as well? As Hazel's father and best friend, perhaps?

And then there's this out of nowhere tweet from actor Cameron Monaghan:

It seems Monaghan is at least hoping to be considered for a role. Augustus' best friend, Isaac, may be a good fit.

Either way, it looks like this is coming together quickly and we should be getting official info soon… So now can we talk about who is going to be playing Augustus Waters?
