'Impossible Is Just Another Tuesday For Us' – Recapping Flash 1.14: 'Fallout'
By Dan Lloyd
At the conclusion of last week's episode, we saw a catastrophic result of Firestorm's power, with Ronnie Raymond and Professor Martin Stein being ground zero for a huge nuclear explosion. This week's episode deals with the fallout, both emotional and nuclear… Or does it?
Well it doesn't deal with the nuclear side of fallout, because well, there was none. Somehow Firestorm did not emit any actual radiation during the explosion and Kaitlyn is understandably relieved as she thought that once again she had lost her loving fiancé. As Barry and Kaitlyn discover Ronnie, they also find Dr. Stein, which shows that the quantum splicer they placed on Ronnie moments before the explosion did indeed work. However, as we can remember from last week's episode, the trauma is not over for the pair, as General Eiling is on their case.
Once back in Central City, Barry is confronted by Joe who has some pretty heavy news for the meta human. Joe reveals that Barry was at the scene of his mother's murder, as an adult. This obviously leaves Barry fairly confused as time travel is still a thing of mystery to everyone; everyone apart from Dr. Martin Stein. Stein had been coming up with theories about how to travel to the future, and said it was possible to go back in time too. He came to the conclusion that it was a side effect of Barry's powers, before he feels that Ronnie needs help.
That's right, while Stein and Ronnie were successfully separated, it appears that some side effects of their own have lingered within the two. Both Ronnie and Martin can feel what the other is thinking on occasion and can feel what they are feeling too. Meanwhile, Ronnie is having coffee with Kaitlyn discussing their future plans and what is next for them as a couple. Ronnie has decided that enough is enough with Star Labs and wants to leave Central City; Kaitlyn however wants to stay and help the team. It looks as if Ronnie and Kaitlyn have met somewhat of an impasse, before General Eiling and his men converge on the coffee shop, looking for Ronnie. While Kaitlyn manages to escape, Ronnie gets caught at the back exit by Eiling's men, but Barry shows up to take out the soldiers. However, Eiling has a special device that tracks kinetic energy, so once he releases the weapon, hundreds of needles shoot into Barry, leaving him incapacitated. Luckily for the duo, Kaitlyn and the others show up in a van to rescue them.
Back at the lab, Wells is seen pouring out some scotch for him and Professor Stein. Seconds later, Stein is unconscious and being dragged away by Eiling's men, after Eiling and Wells had a conversation and he wanted the mentor of the team at Star Labs to give up the second person behind Firestorm. Wells professed to the rest of the team that there was nothing he could do, but it's clear that the truth is about to come out…
Meanwhile, down at Central City News, Iris has been told to find more information on what has happened at Star Labs, due to her connections with several employees there. She goes back to her former home to find Kaitlyn and Ronnie about the stay the night, but she finds familiarity in Ronnie's face. Upon further research, she recognises Ronnie to be the face behind 'The Nuclear Man'. This prompts her to work with her colleagues and delve deeper into Star Labs.
After Stein was kidnapped, the team use Ronnie to try and find out where he is; of course this only happens after Eiling starts to torture Stein with a taser, causing Ronnie to spasm as he can feel every last little bit of pain that Martin can. Ronnie carves 'Where' into his own arm, which shows up on Martin's arm too. Dr. Stein then uses morse code to tap a message through with his location, sending Barry and Ronnie on the tail of the professor. As Eiling discovers he no longer needs Stein for his work, Barry runs in and saves his new friend from a bullet to the head, but at what cost?
As they escape, a car chases after them and one soldier pops out the top and fires a rocket at the trio. Barry assumes that he can intercept the rocket, so jumps up and catches it, but it explodes, leaving a chemical covering his suit. To avoid further contact with the chemical, Barry tells Ronnie and Martin to make a run for it while he sprints in a circle to try and get the chemical to stop burning. In order to survive the trailing soldiers, Ronnie and Martin decide to fuse back together in a bid to beat back the onslaught. They manage to handle the soldiers, but Eiling pulls an ion grenade which renders them as helpless as the other weapon did Barry earlier. Just as Eiling is about to end Firestorm once and for all, Barry catches him with a punch, knocking him out cold.
After racing back to Star Labs, Ronnie and Stein manage to control their powers better and separate, before Ronnie says an emotional farewell to his fiancé once again as he and Dr Stein must go to Pittsburgh to find out more on their new abilities. Ronnie and Stein leave their respective partners, but vow to return soon.
Barry and Joe return to Barry's childhood home (where did that lonely old divorcee from last week go? These two have just come and gone several times here…) where Barry looks over everything and vouches to Joe that he will not follow the same path he did when his mother was murdered, and will make sure that he saves her this time.
At the end of the episode, Eiling gets picked up by a speedster which turns out to be Reverse Flash, who races him across the city and dumps him in the sewer. Reverse Flash takes off his mask and reveals that it is Dr. Harrison Wells who is behind it all (Obviously we suspected it, but this puts the nail in the coffin). Wells and Eiling have a brief conversation before an old friend reacquaints himself with the General. Grodd shows up just as he did last week to drag Eiling down into the depths of the sewer.
Flash will return on March 17 after a small hiatus. To prepare yourself, here is a sneak preview for the next episode:
