Kevin Feige Says R-Rated Marvel Movies Are "Not Out Of The Question"

Post the Blade trilogy the idea of a R-rated comic book movie became a dirty word. The idea of R-rated big budget anything became a dirty word because making your movie R-rated meant shutting out a large portion of the audience. However, blockbuster style comic book movies have come back with the vengeance ever since Deadpool and Logan have been met with critical acclaim and commercial success. Since one company is doing that means the others absolutely must that means the question of whether or not we're going to get a R-rated Marvel Cinematic Universe movie comes up a lot. While doing an interview over in France, according to MCU Exchange, the question was once again brought up to Marvel mega-producer Kevin Feige.

Currently we don't work on R-Rated movies, it's not out of the question but currently, no.

We don't know what the future of the MCU is going to look like going into phase 4 but the insistence from fans that there needs to be a R-rated movie seems to ignore the fact that we have that already over on Netflix. Why does there have to be a R-rated movie? Why can't we just get more Netflix shows that gives us all that sex, violence, and character accurate brutality that some adaptations need?

This is about as close to a "maybe" as we're ever going to get until there is some sort of formal announcement. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is about to cross $900 million worldwide so the model is working for now. Perhaps if one of these movies crashes and burns they'll look at a rating change to shake everything up. For now the movies will remain in the safe, PG-13 area while Netflix will give us the brutal violence in the form of thirteen episode television series.
