Suspect Arrested in Phoenix Over Stolen Batman Comics from Florida
Ten days ago, Bleeding Cool reported that comic book collector and Pedigree Comics' Comic Art Consignment Director, Randy Lawrence of Boca Raton, Florida, had $1,400,000 of Batman comics stolen. 439 slabbed comics including Batman #2-8 from 1939.
Now we get the news from Arizona station ABC 15 that police in Phoenix, Arizona arrested a Florida man shortly after the theft, trying to sell four allegedly stolen comics books worth nearly $100,000. Identified as Phillip Weisbauer (pictured), he allegedly went to a Phoenix comic book shop to get a price on the comic books in question, valued at around $97,000.
He returned two days later to negotiate further, but the owner called the police who followed him to where he was staying, where they found the four comic books, reported as stolen. That would still leave 435 of them worth $1.3 million unaccounted for.
Weisbauer has been charged with theft and trafficking in stolen property.
