Captain America No More? Again? (#7 Spoilers)
So Captain America is suspected of the murder of General Ross in the current comic book series. To be fair, his parallel reality-version did just conquer the USA, under his fascist heel, in Secret Empire. So there's a fair bit of bad feeling still around the Marvel Universe, no matter what Mark Waid and Chris Samnee tried to instil during their run.
Rogers and Ross have history – and there is circumstantial evidence…
That's got to hurt. And we know General Ross is dead, he's currently found in hell over in Immortal Hulk. Connective tissue, you see. So it's time for one of those speeches. You know the ones. The ones that mean he has to quit being Captain America.
Hanging up his shield and suit forever and taking on a new name.
Or just going rogue, considered a criminal by the state.
Well, in Captain America #7 by Ta Nehisi-Coates, Adam Kubert and Frank Martin, it's time to get that game back on the road. Though at least this time, the good Captain remembers the time he has done so before. Coates dug deep on this one…
Well, you know, there are governments and there are governments… you know, when Ta-Nehisi Coates took over Black Panther, there was vocal criticism that he would turn it into some leftist anti-imperial screed. It didn't happen – indeed the Wakanda Intergalactic Empire took a very different tack.
When he started his run on Captain America, there was vocal criticism that he would turn it into some leftist anti-American screed. Instead, we got a deep dive into continuity, with the US going up against Russian forces.
But now? It looks as if those forces are turning America against Steve Rogers. And while Captain America may no longer be Captain America again… he's only doing so in the light of everything he has done before…
