"Inside the Actors Studio" Host, TV Writer James Lipton Passes Away, Age 93
Veteran TV writer and 22 season host of Inside the Actors Studio James Lipton has passed away at his home at the age of 93, TMZ is reporting.
Speaking with the pop culture news and rumor site, Lipton's wife Kedakai Turner had this to say about her husband:
"There are so many James Lipton stories but I'm sure he would like to be remembered as someone who loved what he did and had tremendous respect for all the people he worked with."
Serving as Dean Emeritus of the Actors Studio Drama School at Pace University in NYC for a number of years, where Lipton first spearheaded his famous talk show in 1994. Inside the Actors Studio was filmed in front of a live studio audience made up mostly of student actors, where Lipton interviewed a cross-selection of actors over the years to learn how they approach acting – known for his trademark blue index cards and thought-provoking questions. Lipton would retire from hosting the series in 2018, with others taking over hosting duties.
For over two decades, Lipton's incredibly long list of interviewees include Ben Affleck, Halle Berry, Jeff Bridges, Morgan Freeman, Ian McKellen, Eddie Murphy, Faye Dunaway, Robert Duvall, Ron Howard, Anthony Hopkins, Jim Carrey, Al Pacino, Gwyneth Paltrow, Willem Dafoe, Brad Pitt, Henry Winkler, Betty White, Naomi Watts, Chris Rock, Whoopi Goldberg, Hugh Grant, and so many more.
On the television writing side, Lipton served as head writer on series such as Capitol, Return to Peyton Place, The Doctors, The Best of Everything, Another World, and a number of television specials as a contributing writer. In front of the camera, Lipton appeared in Arrested Development, Bewitched, Guiding Light, The Goldbergs, Cold Squad, You Are There, and also as a voice actor in Disney movie Bolt.
