A Promise That The Fantastic Four Will Return (Amazing Spider-Man #3 Mini-Spoiler)

So in today's Amazing Spider-Man, Peter Parker Industries has bought the Baxter Building.

Amazing_Spider-Man_3-4Ex-Fantastic Four member and current honorary Uncanny Inhuman, the Human Torch (name change to The Inhuman Torch coming soon anyone?) has a problem with this.

Chaos ensues. But in the middle of the melee, a promise made by Peter Parker to Johnny Storm. And maybe a promise from the Marvel creators to their readers as well.IMG_0022The Fantastic Four comic book was cancelled as a direct order from the top, a spiteful move after negotiations with Fox over movie rights to the Fantastic Four and other properties broke down. All licensed merchandising was withdrawn, Marvel's sketch card artists were told not to draw Fantastic Four characters, a gallery had to not show Fantastic Four characters, I was told by staffers they were even ordered to remove all Fantastic Four imagery from the office, it was quite a thing. The characters could still appear in other comics, just not in their own title. At the time I was told that this ban would extend to the DVD sales window of the Fantastic Four movie (early next year) before a comic called The Fantastic Four could be published again by Marvel, although the likelihood of a Fantastic Four sequel might extend that a number of years more.

However the recent coup at Marvel Studios has seen the demands of the movies pressing less on the comic publisher as a split in leadership has emerged. Though at NYCC I was informed by Marvel sources that nothing was going to change regarding the Marvel board's attitude to Fantastic Four, X-Men or the Avengers books right now.  They are still working in support of the Marvel Studios and Sony  movies.

But this moment, in the Amazing Spider-Man comic is a moment of hope that there might be change. Possibly sooner than we may have thought.

As for other FF characters today…

Man, those Irish bars get everywhere. I wonder what St Patrick's Day is like on Alpha Centauri?
