Welcome to the first official episode of Bleeding Cool's Comics Chatter! This is the show where I, Comic Reviews Editor Josh Davison, chat the week's releases with my co-hosts.
This week I am joined by Eliot, our comments moderator and sometimes comic reviewer on BC. We will be talking about Marvel's Peter Parker: The Spectacular Spider-Man #300, Mera: Queen of Atlantis #1 and Terrifics #1 from DC, Rough Riders: Ride or Die #1 from AfterShock, and Abbott #2 from Boom! Studios.
Jeremy Konrad will also be a regular on here, but he wasn't able to join us due to the winter storm tearing through the northeastern United States.
This final session for the first episode is on Boom! Studios' Abbott by Saladin Ahmed and Sami Kivela. For those who don't know, it is a noir-esque reporter-detective drama about Abbott, a black woman living in 1970s Detroit. Racial tension and old magic elements collide to complicate her life and endanger the citizens of Detroit.
This is another one that Eliot was able to read, and he and I agreed that the endless walls of dialogue text don't do any favors for this comic, even if it does try to lean into the genre of a serious drama. We disagree somewhat about how necessary the supernatural elements are and how such things are often used in genre fiction to diffuse the tension brought about by a potentially serious discussion on racism.
We both agree that this comic could be truly great if it just could work out some of its shortcomings, and we both like it to a point despite its problems.
I hope you enjoyed this first real episode of the Bleeding Cool Comics Chatter! They will hopefully be up sooner from here on out. Check back later this week, and the first part or two of the next episode will hopefully be up on the Bleeding Cool YouTube channel.
