Booze Geek: Stone Farking Wheaton W00tstout

w00tstout-1

By Dylan Gonzalez

Beer: Stone Farking Wheaton w00tstout

Brewery: Stone Brewing Co.

ABV: 13%

Sometimes the pieces just fall in perfectly. Turns out Wil Wheaton, of Star Trek fame and many other geeky things, is also a huge fan of craft beer. Going back as far as 2004, Wheaton let the boys at Stone Brewing know what a big fan he was of their work and eventually they decided to work together on a craft brew. That craft brew is the w00tstout, a beer created jointly by Wheaton, Stone's Greg Koch and fark.com's Drew Curtis.
The beer was a dark dark brown, nearly black and produced a two-inch thick head, mocha in color. The head dissipated quickly and left a lasting ring of lacing for quite a while. The beer gave off the scent of dark fruit and milk chocolate.

Though the label on the bottle states that this year's edition (this is the third iteration) was brewed with wheat, rye and pecans, I did not find strong traces of those ingredients while drinking it. I also did not find much of a bourbon character despite it being aged for one year in said barrels. I got a lot of chocolate with some mild caramel and tart dark fruit. The finish was also quite bitter for a stout. On the palate, it felt thick but smooth and coated my tongue like a stout should.

W00tstout works pretty well as a stout to drink in the summer. It has some nice flavor to it, but overall I was a little disappointed with the final outcome. I wish it featured some bolder flavors. It does come with a cool label designed by legendary comic book artist Dave Johnson, who always puts out something cool.
