Booze Geek – The Defender
By Dylan Gonzalez
Booze Geek Special
Beer: The Defender
Brewery: Brooklyn Brewery
ABV: 6.7%
The Brooklyn Brewery has now, for four years, worked with New York Comic Con to create The Defender, a beer that represents not just the con itself, but also super heroics. Garret Oliver, Brewmaster at Brooklyn Brewery, Milton Glaser, DC Comics logo designer, and Cliff Chiang, renowned comic book artist, originally created the Defender's design. The beer now boasts artwork supplied by artist Khary Randolph, known for his work on Spider-Man, X-Men, and Hellboy. The mascot's design is simple but effective, comprised of a white and red hooded cape over tactical clothing. The Brooklyn brewery logo acts as his shield a la Captain America.
Defender had a reddish hue to it, a notably different color than your typical IPA. It poured a half-inch head that disappeared quickly, but left a long lasting ring of lacing. It gave off strong scents of fruity hops (grapefruit being the most prominent) and malt.
The beer was very bitter, with fruit notes and had a strong grapefruit finish. There were some piney traits as well as a slightly bready character to it. I found the beer very pleasant to drink, with the carbonation being noticeable, but not distracting. Defender rounded out to be a really solid IPA and outshining Brooklyn's East India Pale in terms of execution.
The Defender is now available year-round and I suggest you seek it out, especially you comic and beer lovers.
Dylan Gonzalez happens to love beer and comic books and luckily found a place to write about both because he has no idea how to actually make money in the real world. He lives in a cave in New Jersey.
