Carol Danvers' Brand New Origin Explained Today in Life Of Captain Marvel #5 (Spoilers)
Captain Marvel, originally Ms Marvel, originally Carol Danvers, has her superhero origins fundamentally tied in with that of Marvel's original Captain Marvel, Kree Warrior Mar-Vell.
First appearing in the Captain Marvel strip in Marvel Super-Heroes in 1968, she was affected by an attack on Captain Marvel when he got his own self-titled series…
Thanks to a certain exploding Psyceh-Magnitron…
…which was later used to explain how she had her own Kree-based powers in her own spin-off comic book Ms Marvel in 1977.
There has been some annoyance of late that her origin was tied in so closely to another, and with the upcoming movie, the recent series Life Of Captain Marvel has retconned her powers to have been triggered by that event, but actually from her own Kree parentage, that of a Kree warrior mother – who called her daughter Car-Ell.
There has also been some attempt to paint those concerns as some modern social warrior justice screed, but it's worth pointing out that these concerns were expressed back in 1977 in the comic's letters pages.
