Comic Creators Respond To Roy Thomas' Wish For Lead Wolverine Credit
A number of comics folk - including the creators of Deadpool - have commented on Roy Thomas' wish for the lead creative credit for Wolverine.
Article Summary
- Roy Thomas claims his Wolverine creator credit should precede Wein, Romita Sr., and Trimpe.
- Deadpool creators and other comics veterans voice strong reactions to Thomas' statement.
- Rob Liefeld suggests misguided advice led to Thomas' controversial comments.
- Fabian Nicieza argues editors historically aren't credited for creative input.
Yesterday, Bleeding Cool reported on Roy Thomas telling The Hollywood Reporter that his controversial Wolverine creator credit at the end of Deadpool & Wolverine should have come first, ahead of Len Wein, John Romita Sr, and Herb Trimpe. Heaping controversy onto controversy, it also saw traffic for two pieces on Bleeding Cool, Marvel Now Crediting Roy Thomas As Co-Creator Of Wolverine from earlier this year and Talking To Andy Olsen – The Original Creator Of Marvel's Wolverine? from 2013 gain attention and traffic. And plenty of comic book creators and editors wanting to share their two ha'pennies. Otherwise known as a Marvel royalty payment. Here are a few of the more prominent.
Rob Liefeld: For 49 years I can say that I was friends with the Wolverine creators, Len Wein & Herb Trimpe. I met and admired another on the Wolverine creator chain, John Romita Sr. They are all passed away, no longer with us. At this point I have to believe that the counsel being given to the former EIC is terribly compromised whoever that may be. IMHO, someone should have thrown themselves in front of this article before it was sent.
Fabian Nicieza: He was a staff editor and historically, editors have not been credited or compensated for creative contributions done as part of their job. Period.
He can verbally claim co-creator status all he wants and I wouldn't begrudge that based on his contributions, but it shouldn't be acknowledged or compensated by the company as such.Mark Waid: Just straight-up f-cking pathetic.
Bill Sienkiewicz: When sh-tting the bed ceases to be an unfortunate facet of flawed humanity & hubris and instead threatens to overshadow one's entire legacy.
Barry Windsor-Smith: Seems he'll stop at nothing to take credit for other's work.
Josh Adams: Whoever it was at Hollywood Reporter that gave Roy Thomas the platform to continue his attempt at rewriting history in his image needs pull that piece, out of respect for those who are no longer with us and cannot speak for themselves.
David Macho: Seriously, shut up, Roy. SHUT UP. (I'd say Cimino, but….)
Sterling Gates: Disgusting. Utterly disgusting.
Matthew Rosenberg: Movie hasn't even been out a week and THR is already posting spoilers revealing who the villain is.
Ryan Dunlavey What a tool. *I've* written more Wolverine comics than Roy Thomas has (yes, really).
Daniel Kalban: Well, Roy Thomas just destroyed what little goodwill he had left.
Mike Meltzer: Roy Thomas' op ed about totally not being mad that he was credited last as one of the creators of Wolverine because he was editor instead of first before the names of writer Len Wein and artist Herb Trimpe in the list of people who created is so passive aggressive:
Steve Bryant: When it comes to taking undeserved credit, HouseRoy learned from the best.
Marc Andreyko: Good God, Roy Thomas has become a pathetic asshole. Can some of my influences NOT turn into needy dickheads? please?
Matt Adler: "Roy Thomas & Deadpool & Wolverine" would've made for an awkward title.
More to come, I have no doubt.
