3 Comics From First Second To Debut At New York Comic Con: Pashmina, Hunting Accident, And Cucumber Quest
It was a few years ago when, talking to the publishers of First Second Books at a booth at New York Comic Con, I asked if they were debuting any books at that show. They told that First Second didn't do that sort of thing.
That was a while ago of course. Things change.
At this year's New York Comic Con, First Second Books will have three show debuts and 13 featured authors at their booth #2239.
Here are the debuts:
Priyanka Das has so many unanswered questions: Why did her mother abandon her home in India years ago? What was it like there? And most importantly, who is her father, and why did her mom leave him behind? But Pri's mom avoids these questions―the topic of India is permanently closed.
For Pri, her mother's homeland can only exist in her imagination. That is, until she finds a mysterious pashmina tucked away in a forgotten suitcase. When she wraps herself in it, she is transported to a place more vivid and colorful than any guidebook or Bollywood film. But is this the real India? And what is that shadow lurking in the background? To learn the truth, Pri must travel farther than she's ever dared and find the family she never knew.
In this heartwarming graphic novel debut, Nidhi Chanani weaves a tale about the hardship and self-discovery that is born from juggling two cultures and two worlds.
The Hunting Accident, by David Carlson and Landis Blair
It was a hunting accident―that much Charlie is sure of. That's how his father, Matt Rizzo―a gentle intellectual who writes epic poems in Braille―had lost his vision. It's not until Charlie's troubled teenage years, when he's facing time for his petty crimes, that he learns the truth.
Matt Rizzo was blinded by a shotgun blast to the face―but it was while participating in an armed robbery.
Newly blind and without hope, Matt began his bleak new life at Stateville Prison. But in this unlikely place, Matt's life and very soul were saved by one of America's most notorious killers: Nathan Leopold Jr., of the infamous Leopold and Loeb.
From David Carlson and Landis Blair comes the unbelievable true story of a father, a son, and remarkable journey from despair to enlightenment.
Cucumber Quest: The Doughnut Kingdom, by Gigi D.G.
What happens when an evil queen gets her hands on an ancient force of destruction?
World domination, obviously.
The seven kingdoms of Dreamside need a legendary hero. Instead, they'll have to settle for Cucumber, a nerdy magician who just wants to go to school. As destiny would have it, he and his way more heroic sister, Almond, must now seek the Dream Sword, the only weapon powerful enough to defeat Queen Cordelia's Nightmare Knight.
Can these bunny siblings really save the world in its darkest hour?
Sure, why not?
Adapted from the popular webcomic series, Cucumber Quest, The Doughnut Kingdom is the first graphic novel of a clever, adorable, and hilarious four-volume heroic adventure that is sure to make you hungry for sweets and action.
And for their featured authors and the books they will be on hand to sell and sign at the show,
