DC Rebirth Commercials Come To Cable In 2017
DC might not be able to score ratings for its comic-based television shows like The Walking Dead, but as the old saying goes, if you can't beat 'em, purchase advertising time during their commercial break. It's in that spirit that DC Comics will be running eleven different commercials for their Rebirth initiative on AMC next year, as well as networks nobody watches like IFC, TBS, TNT, TruTV, El Rey and Boomerang (these are comics, folks, let's not break the budget). It won't be the first time DC has run ads on television, but unfortunately, they tend to be the sort of low budget animated trailers that are about on par with the quality of a motion comic.
Look, DC, let's have some real talk here. Nobody likes motion comics. The comic art form wasn't meant to be animated. We have cartoons for that. When you animate still drawings, they just look like an inferior version of a cartoon. Stop doing it. Hire some actors, or animate from scratch, and make commercials that people will actually be impressed by. You can show the comics in the commercials. You should. But don't make the commercial all pans of the comic pages with cheap royalty-free music. It's not a good look. That's our advice, and we hope DC takes it.
Newsarama has the report, and they also say that DC will help retailers pay the cost of local advertising with spots in the commercials for local store names. Look for controversial retailer Dennis Barger to find some way to complain about that on Bleeding Cool tomorrow morning.
