Eric Stephenson, Retiring From… His Blog

Eric Stephenson, Retiring From… His BlogHe was my editor on the short lived Gutter Press rumour column for Next Planet Over, back in the day. Later he would publish my Chase Variant comic for Image as publisher of the company. From working as a comics writer and editor for Extreme Comics, it was an unlikely place for the man who would most transform Image Comics into the boutique comic publisher it is today.

Image has now become the premium publisher for original, creator-owned comics in the USA, and has taken that crown firmly and squarely from DC Vertigo. And at San Diego this year, announcing project after project from big name after big name, that crown was firmly placed on Publisher Eric Stephenson's head.

And then yesterday on his blog, he posted;

RETIREMENT

Time to do something else.

A number of Image comic creators and executives have been emailing me, talking to me, all who have been taken by surprise by this. More to come, I'm sure. At San Diego, he also announced his own comic coming from Image, Nowhere Men. Could we be seeing more of that kind of thing instead?

Possibly, but it turns out he was only talking about retiring his blog. As you were, Image comics creators, as you were. You may stop your panicking… but as one Image creator told me "people ought to freak out and realize how damn much we need Stephenson."
