The Genius That Is Gail Simone Strikes Again With Clean Room #1 From Vertigo
I've been waiting for what seems like a century to get my hands on the first issue of Gail Simone's new book Clean Room from Vertigo. Written by Simone, with art and colors by Jon Davis-Hunt, Clean Room is a page-turning thrill. Just in time for Halloween, this intense psychological thriller follows Astrid Mueller, the enigmatic and compelling guru of a giant self-help organization. However, journalist Chloe Pierce has a problem with Astrid's ways due to the fact that her fiancé Philip didn't react so well to Astrid's books. Now Chloe is on a mission to find out who Astrid Mueller really is. What is this Clean Room she's been hearing about where your deepest fear and worst moments are revealed?
As always, Gail Simone's writing is flawless. I always get sucked into the inner dialogue of her characters, and I particularly enjoyed Chloe's. For example, the first line of inner dialogue we get from Chloe is, "Even my horizontal lines feel like a downward spiral." You really can't get much better than that! A thought such as that has so many layers, and that's one of the main reasons I love Simone's writing. She writes in a way that allows us to get to know characters in a deeper way. She doesn't just state facts about the characters past or present. She makes us think.
I don't want to give too much away, but Chloe is dealing with some really deep character motivation to uncover the mysteries behind Astrid's organization. Therefore, Clean Room is one of those comics that you wish you could binge right from the start. It's inevitable to encounter captivating cliffhangers and to be left wanting more. In addition to the excellent writing, Jon Davis-Hunt gives us some beautifully detailed artwork. Then of course, there are the horrifying monsters…Well done Mr. Davis-Hunt. To end, I'm just going to urge you to pick up Clean Room #1 this week. It's a brilliant new addition to the Vertigo family.
