Grant Morrison And Gerard Way Perform At MorrisonCon

Last night Gerard Way and Grant Morrison performed at MorrisonCon. Here's a brief video snippet…

Schedel Luitjen reported on the event for Bleeding Cool;

Okay, the 9 pm performance (which was more like 10, but that is to be expected) was a pretty spectacular word throw-down that, at times, reminded me a bit of slam poetry, but was non-rhyming and had a narrative (which was crazy). I don't think it would be possible to do it justice with a simple recap, and I'm sure someone will put a recording online soon enough. I recorded a bit of it on my phone, but heaven knows whether it'll be audible. I believe that the term 'dime-store de Quincey' was used in the first 30 seconds, which is a wonderful little bit of prose. Gerard Way and another person (whom I didn't recognize, but I guess he could be in My Chemical Romance?) played electronic beats and backings that were matched to the tone of the words. It was beautiful, a spectacle, odd. And apparently a magical ceremony of some kind, presumably to kickstart 'a new epoch', as the singer who followed Morrison said half an hour later. I didn't recognize him either, but he had long dyed blond hair and a bright red leather jacket and black leather trousers.

On a separate note, Gerard Way is incredibly beautiful, a fact I had failed to recognize sufficiently before tonight.

That would have probably been James Dewees on electronica there, with Akira The Don to follow. Schedel also described the contents of the MorrisonCon hardcover for those planning a run to eBay.

A list of the main creators at the event with big pictures of them and lists of major works from the past, then a sketchbook of several drawings from the artists- a penciled Jim Lee variant Action Comics #1 cover, penciled Jim Lee Umbrella Academy #1 variant cover, penciled Invincible #50 Jim Lee variant cover, an Original Art Excerpt by J.H. Williams III from The Sword's upcoming album APOCRYPHON, the pencils to the All-Star Superman Absolute Edition by Frank Quitely, pencils to Batman & Robin #2, page 7 from Frank Quitely (featuring Robin fighting some goons), Batman & Robin #3, page 7 inked art from Frank Quitely (Robin vs. Pyg), a full-color Adam Strange pin-up from Chris Burnham, Batman Incorporated #1 page 13 inked art from Chris Burnham (the one with buildings as panels), a page of Officer Downe (sic) pencils from Chris Burnham, Transmetropolitan #58, page 22 pencils by Darick Robertson, inks from the Happy #1 cover by Darick Robertson, and pencils for the MorrisonCon variant cover of Happy #1 by Darick Robertson. Then a Special Thanks section and six sides of paper for 'Sketch Pages'. One of the organizers said they suggest that we keep the book with us during the con, because it's supposed to be interactive somehow- I'm presuming that has to do with these sketch pages!

The show organiser's tell me that they've practically sold out, now just saving some space for guests, and thanks to the likes of rock gods Grant Morrison and Gerard Way, had around a third of their audience made up by women. Which made a nice change for the party…

And while MorrisonCon may be more a life changing event than a comic convention, it is still behaving like a comic convention in one important way. Announcing news! With DC co-publisher Dan DiDio and DC's new executive director of publicity Alex Segura in the bar yesterday, we might have an inkling over what it might be?

Seaguy Volume 3? Earth One: Wonder Woman? Something totally different?
