What Harley Quinn Really Wants For Her 25th Birthday? More Beaver Jokes

Once upon a time, I used to work writing radio advertisements, initially for radio station Metro FM in Newcastle in the early-nineties, then for an advertising agency called Radioville in Soho in the mid-noughties. The industry was then overseen by the RACC, an official industry regulatory body with one particular individual, Al Damon, becoming a very familiar figure to me. And constantly telling me exactly what I could and couldn't say, along the guidelines of being "legal, decent and honest". I mean, come on, this was advertising!

I specifically recall one rejected script coming back to me, after writing an innuendo-laden ad for Lisa Tarbuck to read for some car cleaning product. Plenty of rubbing gear sticks, polishing knobs, that kind of thing. I may have gone a little too far in one iteration, however, with Al Damon telling me "in order for it to be an innuendo, Richard, it must have more than one meaning."

I was reminded of that today reading Harley Quinn #25 and the 25-year anniversary of the character's creation. Over the last few years, writers Jimmy Palmiotti and Amanda Conner have been yucking it up with Harley's burnt and stuffed beaver, always on display in her apartment, as if they are writing an endless run of Naked Gun movies.

But today? I don't know… maybe they ran out of jokes? Because this particular panel just brought back Al Damon's voice to me all over again.

Jimmy, Amanda, for there to be an innuendo, there has to be more that one meaning etc etc etc … oh go on, just get on with the kissing.

And the groping.

It is her birthday after all…
