John Constantine May Give Us a Clue as to What is Happening With Bruce Wayne – Batman #63 Spoilers
Knightmares is the current Batman arc written by Tom King with a new artist every issue, telling a series of dream-related stories, following on from the assault on Wayne Manor, Alfred and Batman by the Flashpoint Thomas Wayne Batman, somehow here courtesy of Dr Manhattan and somehow manipulating Bruce Wayne's life. We had previously seen him appealing for Bruce to stop being Batman, to be happy instead. And now we have had him ruining Bruce's marriage, seeing his first Robin shot in the head, and now instigating a series of dreams. Or are they?
Last issue saw Batman held captive by Professor Pyg for reasons unknown, unmasked as his own son and Robin, Damian Wayne.
This issue, by Michael Janin, has Batman living a life where he did get married to Catwoman…
But somehow haunted by John Constantine.
It is a defining feature of John Constantine that those who get close to him, will die. His girlfriends, boyfriends, drinking buddies, confidants, they die, often in cruel and unusual fashions. He is the Refrigerator King. His presence here is to pass that fear, that reality, that danger onto Batman.
But we also get one explanation as to what is going on with Batman, what these dreams mean, how they are being caused.
How very Total Recall. Of course, since this is a dream (or is it?), there is no guarantee that this explanation holds any water at all. And, because it's a dream you do also get the kind of scene that DC comic book fans have always wanted.
Batman one-punching John Constantine, knocking the cigarette from his lips. Even in a dream, John should have seen that coming… though maybe he just read the solicitation which has nothing to do with what actually happens in this comic.
