Friday Runaround – Books, TV, Statues, Cons And Comics Without The Covers

TweetWatch: New England Comics in MA is selling 8-to-a-bunch 1st issue packs of coverless Flashpoint books.

ChicagoWatch: The Chicago Tribune says;

Wizard World's Chicago Comic Con, the convention of pop culture, movies, graphic novels, comics, toys, video gaming, television, sci-fi and anime, includes celebrity appearances, preview screenings of gaming, original art, collectibles and more. Celebrities scheduled to appear include Pam Grier ("Smallville," "Jackie Brown"), Bruce Campbell ("Burn Notice," "Army of Darkness"), Louis Gossett Jr. ("Stargate SG-1," "Roots," "Enemy Mine") and Julie Benz ("Dexter," "Desperate Housewives"). The Smashing Pumpkins' Billy Corgan will also appear to introduce his new professional wrestling endeavor, Resistance Pro.

The Chicago Sun Times has their own take;

After walking down the aisles and encountering assorted Batmans and Spider-Mans, a battalion of "Star Wars" stormtroopers and endless queues of people lined up for celebrity autographs, you start to wonder: Where are the actual comic books at Wizard World Chicago Comic Con?

Oh, they're there, all right, represented by fewer dealers every year but still holding their own amid the hoopla and Hollywoodization of the event, which has really become more of a celebration of pop culture.

ChicagoWatch2: The Chicago Sun Times also has a first shot from Powers, filming in the city.

Friday Runaround – Books, TV, Statues, Cons And Comics Without The Covers

Eglee says the pilot, which will air around June 2012 if the full series is ordered, deconstructs superheroes and the super-crime drama.

"For me it was about creating some interesting characters in a law enforcement context, and it just so happens that the bad guys they're fighting have abilities that regular people don't have," he said. "I just look at our bad guys as metaphors for real-life characters."

TVWatch: With Misfits now available on Hulu, Americans have no excuse not to get caught up with this best-superpower-show-ever before the third series starts on British TV soon. Salon talks to creator and writer of the show, and superhero sounding name in his own right, Howard Overman.

In America, when a person gets special powers they go off and save the world. I wanted to do it on a smaller scale: These teens became powerful, but then they just carried on trying to be normal, hanging out with their mates and such. It was just a massive inconvenience for them to have these gifts. All they want to do is keep it secret, and live day to day.

BookWatch: While Tom Andry is writing private eye superhero fiction, with a new book out, Bob Moore: No Hero and a sequel this month.

StatueWatch: And Mark Millar's home town of Coatbridge is to get a new superhero statue by Andy Scott, celebrating the attention Millar has brought to the world, unveiling next Friday. Apparently, I can't find any other PR about it..

Friday Runaround – Books, TV, Statues, Cons And Comics Without The CoversThis is Computo the Comic Link Conqueror speaking. I come for your women. But for now I merely collate comic-related bits and pieces online. One day I will rule. Until that day, read on.

They say I am a work in progress. The fools.

My Name is Laurenn, and I am a Bad (comics) Feminist

Today, I asked some questions on the internets about the upcoming Womanthology book. It has raised over $100k, and gotten some comics press. I, along with some other people, have asked where that money is going. In return, I have gotten emails, tweets & texts saying among other things that I was "starting a fire where there was no wood" and "contributing to girl-on-girl violence". My goodness.

DC Women Kicking Ass – Guest Post: Batgirl! The Secret Origin

""Create a new Batgirl. Or I will."
So said then DC Universe Executive Editor Mike Carlin in his always cute and cuddly way.

DC Universe: The Source » Blog Archive » The cover to GREEN LANTERN: NEW GUARDIANS #1 revealed

When we revealed the covers for the first issues coming out of DC Comics-The New 52, the cover for GREEN LANTERN: NEW GUARDIANS #1 was very ominous. Why? Because we didn't want to spoil the line-up of the New Guardians team just yet. Today, take a look at Tyler Kirkham and Batt's cover for the book. Featuring a member from each of the color Corps, GREEN LANTERN: NEW GUARDIANS #1 flies into stores on September 28th.

Mystery Hoard: Marvel Boycott Diary #6: Seth

Bryan Munn asked me if I would write a couple of words to support Steve Bissette's Marvel Comics boycott. I am certainly in favour of it. I hope it catches fire and spreads. The corporation badly needs to be shamed into doing the right thing.
