Nintendo Acknowledge That The Wii U's Production Is Ending

This is a little story that slipped me by the other day, but one worth noting regardless.

With the Nintendo Switch incoming and expected to be the company's next big console, it is no surprise to find out that Nintendo have officially acknowledged that the Wii U is ceasing production soon. This started with a note on the company's Japanese site (via Kotaku) that the console is set to end production very soon.

Then IGN got this letter from Nintendo suggesting that the same thing is happening in North America. It said:

As recently posted by Nintendo on the Wii U website in Japan, Wii U production will end in the near future for the Japanese domestic market. We have nothing to announce in terms of exact timing.

We can confirm that as of today, all Wii U hardware that will be made available in the North American market for this fiscal year has already been shipped to our retail partners. We encourage anyone who wants Wii U to communicate with their preferred retail outlet to monitor availability.

While this is kind of sad, and while the console will almost certainly go down as a commercial failure, the Wii U is a really neat console. It has a handful of truely excellent games that will keep its name alive in the history of medium. Onwards to the Switch though!
