Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Movie In The Hands Of Mission: Impossible 4 Writers
Hannah Shaw Williams writes for Bleeding Cool:
I am a 90s kid. I grew up with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, The Mighty Morphin' Power Rangers and the less well-remembered Biker Mice From Mars (for those of you who've never seen it, let me assure you I didn't just make that title up – I'm not that creative).
I also watched avidly the movie adaptations of all these series, even when their quantity began to overwhelm their quality. So you can bet that when the next Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles film rolls around I will be there in the cinema, gripping the cup holder for better or worse. And considering it's being produced by Michael Bay, I have a terrible feeling it might be the latter.
Alright, I'll try not to beat down on this film when it's this early in pre-production. The script was originally in the hands of Iron Man writers Art Marcum and Matt Holloway, but Deadline have just reported that it's been handed off to the screenwriting team behind the forthcoming Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol – André Nemec and Josh Appelbaum. I'll try to give you a comprehensive but concise rundown of this pair, because I believe strongly that the script is always what makes a movie great in the end.
First thing you need to know is that these guys are stuck together like sellotape in a treacle factory. The point is, if you see one of them in the writing credits there's a good chance that the other won't be far off. They're like screenwriter versions of Ant & Dec. You might have seen their work if you've ever watched TV show Alias (I've only seen one episode and therefore can't pass judgement). In fact, aside from Mission Impossible 4, their background is almost entirely in writing for TV and they've played a big hand in bringing you shows like October Road, Happy Town, and the show that I bitch loudly about in an ignorant and uninformed way: the American version of Life on Mars.
So from what IMDb can tell us, it seems that at least Nemec and Applebaum have a strong background in writing for action movies, so at least they should keep the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles leaping and bounding in and out of explosions for the duration of the film. They might even be able to distract us from the fact that, at the end of the day, it's a film about oversized mutant turtles who eat pizza and know kung fu.
