The JP Silva PBS/History Channel Scamp

history_channel_logo

A comics scamp not involving Josh Hoopes? It feels wrong, doesn't it?

Right now a man calling himself JP Silva is working his way through the comic store phone book.

He calls store owners purporting to be a producer working on a series called Myths, Legends, & Supermen, to be hosted by Hugh Downs and appear on either PBS or the History Channel.

The show will focus on different aspects of the comic book field, with some installments focusing on comics writers, some on artists, some on comics journalism, some on history, some on retailing.

Sadly it doesn't exist. And it's at this point that Silva starts talking about the free publicity the store would receive in return for its participation, and suddenly the advertising isn't free at all and Silva is asking for an upfront payment…

Yes, exactly.

Stores targeted include Dr No's, Flying Colors Comics, Comics Unlimited and Main Street Comics.

"JP Silva" has been calling from a number in Boca Raton, Florida. I may call him back later today.
