Rich Johnston Is 42 Today And His Favorite Book Is….
You know, it was actually really difficult to get Rich Johnston to answer this question. He knew it was an answer he didn't want to give, but he also knew what the answer was beyond question: The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy by Douglas Adams. It's a tough call to make, one's hands-down favorite book, and you find yourself wondering about the timing: was it just because you read the book when young or at a formative juncture in life?
Well, Rich Johnston has turned 42 years old as of this November 21st, and he feels he finally has the question to Life, the Universe, and Everything, and it is: How old am I today? Lying…
So why does he like the Guide so much? And so much that he'd pick it as his top book over a graphic novel, even?
He says:
It's not just that it's an extremely funny, ahead of its time, incredibly imaginative science fiction novel, but Douglas Adams has the cadence of P.G. Wodehouse, but, you know, in space and shit. When I first read it, the book opened my mind, not only to the possibilities of storytelling, but of language. So many lines are absolutely perfect examples of writing and each time I read it, I fall in love with a new sentence. It's easy to think the books you read when you were 10 or 11 are the greatest works of literature, but I read an awful lot of stuff back then and it's Hitchhiker's that stands out above all others.
