SDCC '15: The Batpanel – Spoilers From The Next Issue And "Lumberbruce"

Scott Snyder and Greg Capullo have been talking at the Batpanel at San Diego Comic Con… and about how they really didn't get on at the beginning. And when looking back at their early e-mails for additional material for the trades, found all sorts of passive aggression, with Capullo telling Scot that he didn't need so many words, with Scott replying "But Mr Capullo…"

DC's John Cunningham loves spoilers, and wants to run as many as Scott Snyder is happy to run… so here we go. You have been warned. But first we saw some images from this week's Batman, the Bat Truck, which Scott now wants to write a Fury Road arc for…

How the criminals of Gotham are now embodying the city to fight the new Batman.

Bringing back Bruce Wayne, "what if Batman died and Bruce Wayne came back, I had never seen that story… he comes back without the pathology he had before, how is this character going to live outside the mythology of Batman? It's a very personal story for all of us… examing him from an angle we've never seen before."

Scott also bemoans how sexy Dick Grayson is seen as by the audience but that Bruce Wayne never gets that love. He's hoping that "Lumberbruce" may fix that. Greg talked about how he only recently was able to see the images that Scott had been sending him as reference… including beards.

But time for Mr Bloom in future issues to come…

Greg Capullo talked about being told that this creepy villain had a flower on his mask. "I give my wife flowers, what the hell?…. he'd said that Mr Bloom was like a weed" so he did something thorny and nasty but Scott kept sending flowers. But once he send a flower with teeth, he had something he could work with.

"We don't always see it through the other guy' eyes straight away…"

image

This is the first page of the next issue, with the flower saying "Oh hi, thanks for showing up, I made a little something, come closer."

Scott sees the flower as the Cyclops eye and Greg has decided that it's fun to draw.

image

Alfred and Clark Kent taking about Batman, "what did Clark expect for it to go on and on in different ways" and how nightmarish the futures of Batman could be.

image

They also talked about getting the Jim Gordon Batman with candy cigarettes getting through… even the sweet version can be controversial.

Both Scott and Greg talked about how the book becomes personal, how Bruce mirrors many of Scott's attitudes in life, and hiw Jim Gordon's workout and diet routine mirrors that of Greg… "cut out the carbs!" But that inspires them both to work well together on the book, knowing that it's so personal to each other. As Greg says to Scott, "you're the best writer I've ever worked wirh. Not the easiest, but the best."

As for the Joker, "he's just a decomposing corpse, he'll never come back…" says Scott. So who believes…?

Scott talked about the hiring of Mark Doyle as Batman, and it was expected that Doyle would then leave as DC moves West, but he made the committment to move with the publisher to stay working with the team of Scott and Greg, with Greg recounting a night out with Mark, to make the case that he move out, and that deision has only made their team stronger.

We also got to see lots of process art…
