Spoiling The Ending Of Avengers 1959 #1
It's been almost a week. I think we can get away with this now. At the end of the first issue of Avengers 1959 by Howard Chaykin, the younger Nick Fury, after getting up to all sorts with his late fifties Avengers team, meets an unidentified Brit.
Unidentified to some, maybe. And he may not be sporting a bowler hat, but there's no mistaking that mix of cane, smart suit and a certain curliness of hair.
Because that is Steed, government-sponsored adventurer of 1961 ITV series, The Avengers.
Using the name a couple of years before Marvel Comics would, The Avengers was a TV series that lasted a decade, before returning another decade later as The New Avengers. Part spy, part restrained action adventure, part sci-fi, part excuse for women to high kick in leather, The Avengers was a peculiarly British take on the American cop show, tongue in cheek, playful and occaionally quite brutal.
And just as The Avengers 1959 is a prequel to The Avengers comic, so it now seems to be a prequel to the TV series as well.
I wonder if we find out where Steed gets his bowler hat from…
