Terrible Comic Book Art For Very Good Causes

Ryan L. Schrodt  writes,

My name is Ryan L. Schrodt and I am a comic book writer that most of you haven't heard of—I'm perhaps best known for my webcomic Dear Dinosaur, though I also scripted an issue of Youngblood for Image Comics and I've contributed stories to a ton of anthologies including the Harvey Award nominated 27: A Comics Anthology from Red Stylo Media/Action Lab. I also make silly drawings on the side to sell at conventions—though right now I am auctioning off some for charity and I'd like you to consider bidding.

The past few weeks since the Presidential election have been very difficult for people on every end of the political spectrum. Anger, fear, mistrust, and hopelessness have hang like a dark cloud over our nation. To combat this bleak climate, many have chosen to stand up for what they believe in and to take action not only to reaffirm their beliefs, but to make the world a better place. No matter who you voted for or what you believe in, it has become abundantly clear that something must be done in order to counteract all of the negativity that is prevalent in our current national climate.

One thing I have noticed in my circle of friends is an uptick in volunteering and charitable donations for causes that are important to them. Taking a page from their book, I decided to launch a series of original art auctions on eBay with 100% of the proceeds will go towards organizations and charities that share my values and support causes that I believe in. While I am admittedly a hardcore unflinching liberal, I have chosen a number of causes that I believe will be supported by conservatives and liberals alike. Many of these groups support a portion of our populace that has been marginalized over the course of this election and its aftermath—I believe that these groups can help support those who truly need it.

All of the art pieces are 9 x 12 on Bristol board, done with markers and colored pencil. I know that my art skills are limited (I'm mostly a writer after all), but I like to think of these sketches as fun incentives to support very worthy causes. You can find all of the auctions here or you can read my descriptions and follow individual links below.

CAPTAIN AMERICA – Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America

s-l1600

The ongoing conflicts in the Middle East have been "the war" of my generation and I have seen many friends and family members deployed to combat operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. This organization is the largest non-profit organization dedicated to supporting these specific veterans and their families. We need to take care of our soldiers and their families.

GHOSTBUSTER JILLIAN HOLTZMAN – The Girl Project

s-l1600-1

The Girl Project, created by Glamour Magazine and the Silicon Valley Foundation, provides resources and programs to help young women worldwide successfully enter into secondary education.

LUKE CAGE AND IRON FIST – The Southern Poverty Law Center

s-l1600-2

The Southern Poverty Law Center fights bigotry and hatred for American citizens through litigation and education. In the last few weeks, they have championed the fight against the rise in hate crimes all across our country.

CHEWBACCA – The Karam Foundation

s-l1600-3

The Karam Foundation is a non-profit organization dedicated to helping refugees displaced by the ongoing conflicts in Syria. What to do with these refugees was a major talking point in the election, but I firmly believe that there is only one thing we can do—help them. This may not be "our fight," but we cannot sit idly by.

DICK TRACY – The HTB Fund

s-l1600-4

The HTB Fund, the non-profit arm of Humanizing the Badge, provides free and confidential resources to police officers and their families struggling against the stresses of the job. Law enforcement has come under a lot of scrutiny lately—much of it justified—and so the already difficult position has become even harder psychologically. By offering resources to combat this, we better protect those who protect us.

MS MARVEL – The Muslim American Leadership Alliance

s-l1600-5

The Muslim American Leadership Alliance is a multi-faceted organization that seeks to educate and provide leadership opportunities to strengthen not only Muslim communities in America, but also their relationships with the larger American community as a whole.

BATWOMAN – The Human Rights Campaign Foundation

s-l1600-6

The Human Rights Campaign Foundation is the world's largest organization dedicated to improving the lives of the LGBTQ+ community, not only in America, but worldwide.

BLUE BEETLE – The Cisernos Center for New Americans

s-l1600-7

The Cisernos Center provides education, resources, and opportunities for all "new Americans" whether they were born in the United States or are looking to become part of our great nation. They believe that everyone, regardless of their place of birth, should have the opportunity to achieve the American Dream.

BONE – The Comic Book Legal Defense Fund

s-l1600-8

The CBLDF is at the forefront of the good fight against censorship in comic books, providing resources and support to creators, publishers, educators, retailers, librarians, and readers who want to take part in our amazing medium.

SUPERMAN AND SUPERGIRL – ForeverU

s-l1600-9

ForeverU is dedicated to diminishing bullying in all forms through education and direct action—they consider themselves "love" based and want everyone to have the chance to be themselves without fear of harassment and violence.

WOMEN OF STAR WARS – Planned Parenthood International

s-l1600-10

Planned Parenthood is committed to providing healthcare to women of all ages. They believe that sexual and reproductive healthcare is a human right. They provide a very, very wide range of services to women in need.

I believe strongly in these causes and would greatly appreciate if you were to consider bidding on the sketches or at least spreading the word. This is just one small step that can be taken to improve the lives of others at a time when we feel like hope is fleeting.
