Three Comics Parody Red Sonja This Week – and One Of Them is Red Sonja

What with Marvel Comics giving Conan a big push of late, it's natural that a related comic that they don't have the US rights to, Red Sonja, would benefit from that push. This week, while Conan pops up in Savage Avengers, a superheroic take on the role of the character, so his paramour Red Sonja is all over the place.

Red Sonja was created as a warrior queen by Roy Thomas and Barry Windsor-Smith for Marvel Comics in 1973, partially based on Robert E. Howard's characters Red Sonya of Rogatino and Dark Agnes de Chastillon, but legally separate. However by appearing first in the licensed Conan comic, and made part of the Hyborian canon she was no longer owned by Marvel.

And so this week we have Red Sonja #5 published by Dynamite, a reincarnation of the original Red Sonja for continuity's sake. Though written by satirist Mark Russell. it can't help at least parody what might be expected in such a comic – or moreover, the world around Red Sonja.

Then Dynamite are also publishing Bettie Page Unbound #1 in which the 1950s model and actress finds herself dimensionally slipping into the role of Red Sonja,

And Keenspot Entertainment is launching their new parody title, zombifying the character as Dead Sonja.

Is this the time for Dave Sim to revive Red Sophia from Cerebus? Probably not… not these days. Here are solicits and previews for Red Sonja Wednesday…
