Bleeding Cool's Bestseller List had Ultimate Spider-Man #1 not only topping the week's bestselling comics, but smashing the sales charts, selling over twice what the Rise Of The Powers Of X #1 launch comic did. Copies of the standard comic have been selling on eBay, raw, for $25 to $45 already, and it only came out on Wednesday.
Timmy Heague, writer for Archie Comics (and available for work for hire), and owner of Arsenal Comics, located in Newbury Park and Ventura in California, posted his own experiences selling the comic yesterday, "Ultimate Spider-Man #1 was our highest ordered Marvel release in ages and after 48 hours one location is completely sold out with the other being very close to it. We're seeing new faces in the shops coming in asking for it and I am so over the moon about it. This is exactly what shops needed. The thing with a hit though is you can never have enough so once we're sold out, it's going to be a bummer to not have it for people coming in. Hopefully they want the second print? Unfortunately in these cases the second print doesn't come soon enough for the demand or the consumer/collector doesn't want it due to second print but regardless I'm taking the chance and ordering up!"
It blew up a bit. He returned to say "Just checked my phone for the first time in a couple hours and seeing the responses to this. To give some food for thought, when I asked every new face today who came in to buy this comic what excited to them about it, not one said "because he's married and happy with MJ." But hey if it sticks around and is still there and working, keeping it authentic to the character and interesting, I'm all for it and would love to be wrong, if anyone can write it, Hickman can. Also shoutout to modern master @MChecC. This book will make him a definitive Spidey artist for so many new readers. Excited for them to fall in love with his artwork and get ready to read tons more great stuff that he's done through the years."
"In the time it took me to write these tweets this is now what's left. It's a 10/10 and done by a powerhouse creative team but in instances like this I definitely am curious if anything on the marketing front was done differently for this release. Maybe it's just word of mouth?"
"And then there was one."
At which point, Arsenal Comics posted "Ultimate Spider-Man #1 has SOLD OUT at your local Arsenal! Every single cover too! This was our highest ordered comic in a long long long time. The demand for this new series is POWERFUL! Marvel has announced a rush second print! Orders need to be submitted by Monday to guarantee your copy! Order now in store, calling us, ordering on Comichub, messaging us, wow- there's a lot of ways to get ahold of us! The second printing of Ultimate Spider-Man #1 hits Arsenal on Wednesday, February 21 — the very same day as issue #2."
It is possible that certain Bleeding Cool coverage may have helped move the needle on this one as well.
