Playstation Plus Multiplayer Event Opens Next Week
Sony will be giving online multiplayer access to non-PS Plus subscribers from February 22 until February 26. Granted, this free trial only applies to online multiplayer functions and not the month's free games and store discounts that are available to regular PlayStation Plus subscribers.
The amusing thing about this event is that it's very clearly in competition with Microsoft's current free online multiplayer event. This weekend, Xbox Live Silver members can enjoy the online multiplayer benefits of a Gold subscription up through February 19th and get a chance to demo Rocket League and NBA 2K17.
While Microsoft is giving Silver players a chance to demo a few games, Sony has drawn the line at online multiplayer. Since PlayStation 4 is still the bestselling console in North America, it made sense that Microsoft would launch their campaign to get more people to purchase Gold subscriptions.
Personally, I've got to wonder who doesn't have a PS Plus or Xbox Gold subscription these days, but I'm way too connected to my online access.
This free multiplayer weekend comes right on the heels of Sony's announcement that PS Plus support will be dropped on a lot of devices including the PS3 and all Sony Blu-ray players after August 15, 2017. They must be hoping this will soothe some ruffled feathers. And who knows. Maybe this will convince them all to go buy PS4s and subscribe?
My instinct is no, however.
For current subscribers, this month's free games for PS Plus are LittleBigPlanet 3, Not a Hero, Starwhal, Anna: Extended Edition, Ninja Senki DX, and TorqueL.
