Sony Is Getting Out of the Handheld Gaming Business
Earlier today, Sony announced that they were putting an end to the PS Vita starting in Japan, and from what it sounds like, they're not going back. According to an interview with Gematsu, Sony Interactive Entertainment Senior VP Hiroyuki Oda basically laid it all out on the line and was very blunt about the future plans for the company when it comes to handheld devices.
"Currently, we do not have any plans regarding a new handheld device," Oda said. "In Japan, we will manufacture PlayStation Vita until 2019. From there, shipping will end."
After 2019, the only company currently making physical handheld devices that would be considered consoles would be Nintendo, who are currently making an entire series of them at this rate. A lot of people thought if anyone could compete with Nintendo in that area, it would be Sony. But it looks like that challenge has a decisive winner with no rematch in sight.
