Ant-Man and The Wasp Is Looking to Make $80M in Its Opening Weekend
July is here, and it's time to look at some box office figures. July is when a lot of big blockbusters come out, but it's also an interesting month when it comes to the worldwide box office. This is the month where almost no western movies make it to the Chinese box office, which can really hurt a movie that is looking to make up a huge budget. There are a couple of big movies coming out this weekend, but the biggest is Ant-Man and The Wasp.
According to Variety, the latest Marvel movie is on track to take in between $70 million and $80 million its opening weekend. While those aren't huge numbers, this isn't Avengers: Infinity War, and Marvel isn't expecting this movie to do those numbers. Even the lowest projections put it above the $57 million that the first movie took in.
This is the final Marvel production until March of 2019 with Captain Marvel. The superhero juggernaut has had a fantastic year, with Black Panther walking away with a $1.3 billion at the worldwide box office and Avengers: Infinity War breaking that $2 billion glass ceiling. If Ant-Man and The Wasp manages to pull in $700 million by the end of its theater run, the Marvel movies alone will have earned Disney $4 billion at the box office.
The second movie opening this weekend, though two days before Ant-Man and The Wasp on July 4th, is The First Purge. The prequel to the highly successful horror series is looking to tell the story of how the Purge came to be. It looks like this one might be leaning into the whole "the purge was created so poor people would kill each other" angle, which means this could be one of the more interesting entries in the series. The Blumhouse movie is looking to bring in a respectable $25 million over a day five-day weekend. The movie took less than $20 million to make, so if the movie meets the projections, we can assume this isn't the last time we'll see a movie based in the Purge universe.
Despite dividing critics, Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom is looking to drop out of the first place spot and into second place. The movie has made $669 million worldwide, and Variety is predicting that this dinosaur sequel will join the billion-dollar box office club by the end of the week. Incredibles 2 also continues to do well, bringing in $648 million in the worldwide box office. That box office is more than the total box office of the first movie, which was only $633 million back in 2004.
The third and fourth place entries are anyone's game at this point, though the top two are looking like Ant-Man and The Wasp followed by Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. We'll have to see if a family movie or a horror movie ends up reigning supreme over this upcoming weekend.
Summary: As Scott Lang balances being both a Super Hero and a father, Hope van Dyne and Dr. Hank Pym present an urgent new mission that finds the Ant-Man fighting alongside The Wasp to uncover secrets from their past.
Ant-Man and The Wasp, directed by Peyton Reed, stars Paul Rudd, Evangeline Lilly, Hannah John-Kamen, Michael Douglas, and Michael Peña. It will be released on July 6th.
